Akira Ifukube was a pre-eminent Japanese composer. His vast oeuvre includes such concert masterpieces as Japanese Rhapsody (1935), Ballata Sinfonica (1943) and Sinfonia Tapkaara (1954, revised 1979). However, Ifukube is perhaps best known as a composer of music for the cinema. He composed nearly 300 film scores, including most of those from the classic Godzilla series. Many consider his music for Godzilla (1954) to be one of the most important film scores of all time.
