Godzilla 2014: BBC Talks To Gareth Edwards During London Screening

From BBC

British director Gareth Edwards has given a sneak preview of footage from his forthcoming blockbuster Godzilla.

At a screening in London, Edwards described the three years he has spent on the film as "the hardest, most intense, most exhausting".

In 2011, the visual effects specialist won best director at the British Independent Film Awards for his debut feature film Monsters.

The film, edited in his London home, cost around £500,000 ($800,000).

In May, the 38-year-old will unveil the full version of Hollywood's latest take on the sci-fi classic Godzilla, filmed in Canada and Hawaii, on a supersize budget of $150m (£89m).

But he said there was a "simple answer" to tackling such a leap in budget.

"Imagine you wrote a list of all the pros and cons of making a low-budget movie, then when you make a high budget movie - just swap them over.

"Everything that is easy to do when there is just three of you, is really hard when there are 400 of you - and everything that is really hard to do when you have a budget of £10 is really easy when you have millions."

"The real difficulty," he continued. "Which is the hardest thing about making movies, full stop - is to try and tell a gripping story that you really care about. Whether you have 10p or £200m, it is just as hard - so that's what we focused on."

The film stars Kick-Ass actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Juliette Binoche and Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston.

"As you are working on the screenplay, you can't help but picture the actors you would like to have in the roles," Edwards told reporters.

"You shouldn't do it, because you usually can't get them - but we had this little wish-list, and we sent out the screenplay and crossed our fingers - and every single one of them went for it. Thank God, or rather, Godzilla.

Despite their movie star credentials, Edwards diplomatically insisted none of his A-list cast acted like primadonnas.

"We did actually check them out beforehand - I was like 'life is too short, can we find out if any of these people are a nightmare?' - but they were all fantastic.

"Thank God I hadn't seen a billion episodes of Breaking Bad like everyone else, otherwise I would have been too intimated to walk to work with Bryan. I had seen him in a few, but the real reason I wanted Bryan was because of Malcolm in the Middle - and an episode of Airwolf from 1986."

Edwards' new take on the Japanese monster tale is the first big budget version since the critically panned 1998 version, directed by Roland Emmerich.

The filmmaker said that heaped even more pressure on him.

"It's amazing how many people out there are closet Godzilla fans. I thought there were probably about 100 Godzilla fans, including me but every single day during shooting - in a quiet moment - people would lean over and say: 'I love Godzilla, don't cock it up!'. I've had that conversation on loop for the past year."

"Everybody involved was so keen not to squander this chance."

'Godzooky'

Referring to the incarnation of Godzilla in cartoon form, Edwards joked: "It's a standard go-to joke among my friends that I am working on Godzooky."

Instead he has cited the 1954 original as his key inspiration.

"I realised how good that movie was. How it was a metaphor for Nagasaki and Hiroshima, and how it's actually a very serious take on a monster movie."

"It took us a good year to land on a story that felt right to everybody. And what is very much at the heart of our movie - as with the original - is man versus nature. And that if you mess with nature, you're going to lose."

Edwards said he believed "all good science-fiction is either metaphorical or an analogy for something else".

"You are looking for the bigger truth," he explained. "As the human race, we do abuse our position a lot and never really face the consequences - but now and again we do.

"There is never going to be a giant monster coming out of the ocean and smashing up a city but the physical consequences of stuff you see in this film does happen: we do have tsunamis, we have had meltdowns at nuclear power plants...."

The film follows one family searching for answers in the aftermath of a private tragedy. And then the monster - and all hell - breaks lose.

Edwards said he was "very lucky" to land the Godzilla gig, but admitted to often feeling outclassed by his colleagues who include cameramen and producers who have worked with the likes of Terrence Malick, Steven Spielberg and Akira Kurosawa.

"I was thinking I don't belong here - these are legends of cinema, what am I doing? I'm from Nuneaton!"

Sony Godzilla Releases Rumored To Be Coming To Blu-ray May 6th

From The Good, The Bad, And Godzilla

Rumor has it — repeat — rumor has it that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will be issuing four double-feature discs of their Heisei and Millennium Godzilla titles on May 6th to capitalize on the frenzy created by the release of the upcoming Gareth Edwards re-imagining of the original creature feature opening on May 16th. Each double-feature package will contain two discs, Blu-ray and UltraViolet Digital Copies, and will retail for $19.95. According to as of yet unverified sources, these are the titles dropping:

GODZILLA VS. KING GHIDORAH (1991) & GODZILLA VS. MOTHRA (1992), GODZILLA VS. MECHAGODZILLA II (1993) & GODZILLA VS. SPACE GODZILLA (1994), GODZILLA VS. DESTOROYAH (1995) & GODZILLA VS. MEGAGUIRUS (2000), GODZILLA FINAL WARS (2004) & GODZILLA: TOKYO SOS (2003).

Conspicuously missing are GODZILLA 2000 (1999), GIANT MONSTERS ALL-OUT ATTACK (2001), and GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA (2002). It's unknown at this time if these will follow, or if there is any validity to this rumor — I'm checking on sources, but it's the middle of the night... But until then, in the words of the immortal Henry Silva, "Bullshit or Not? YOU decide!"

Update: This is now apparently official, although they are listed on Amazon as DVD releases not Blu-ray at the moment and are listed for May 6th release date.

20 Minutes Of Godzilla Preview By Gareth Edwards In Germany

From MoviePilot

"Why Hamburg?", You want to probably know. This was not about a pure marketing idea, but was at the request of the director himself there instead. Gareth Edwards' debut Monsters celebrated in 2010 at the Fantasy Filmfest in Hamburg its premiere, which is why he chose for nostalgic reasons, the Hanseatic city to a world exclusive there a selected audience about 20 minutes from his version of Godzilla to show up. And we were there!

Before the first two scenes of Godzilla remakes were shown, said a visibly nervous, small and very likeable Briton front of the screen to us. Gareth Edwards told us, as well as in the subsequent scenes where we find ourselves in the story of the film and why the Featured happened. With the repeated emphasis that these scenes were previously shown anybody yet and we really should ignore one or the other not finished part, such as raw CGI effects or the non-final soundtrack ...

Possible Spoilers

But now close to the scenes: We are in a nuclear power plant in Tokyo, where apparently something goes wrong. The senior nuclear physicist Joe Brody ( Bryan Cranston though) can prevent the worst, but it has to plug a huge personal low blow. 15 years later we find ourselves in this power plant again. This time is Daisuke Serizawa ( Ken Watanabe ), the senior physicist and Brody is instead in an interrogation room where he accused all employees of the power plant, and especially the government of wanting to cover something up. Because the reason for the former incident was not an earthquake, but something much worse and man created thing and it comes back. He also wanted his son, Ford Brody ( Aaron Taylor-Johnson ) have again. In these short scenes, especially Cranston was able to convince emotionally.

Some Interesting Things Of Note In The New Godzilla 2014 Trailer

After watching the new trailer many times a few interesting things I noticed, and I'm sure there is stuff I missed, it appears to be pieces of Mutos and planes falling into to ocean in a couple of scenes, there is what we can assume is a Muto leg in one shot, there is a scene where Ken Watanabe's character is in a cave and there is a skeleton of what appears to be a Godzilla (meaning more then one existed (or exists?)), atomic bombs were use to stop Godzilla in 1954 and may have not actual created him, Godzilla is huge the largest version ever, there is most likely many Mutos not just one male and female, there appears to be eggs attached to what may be a nuclear weapon and may be "feeding" off it, the fights/battles will likely take place all over the US.

Empire Magazine Shows Godzilla 2014 Cover

You know what's cooler than our new Godzilla subscribers cover? No, we can't think of anything either. Like a penguin in a blender, it's black and white and red all over, and gives you some idea of the mayhem we can expect from Gareth Edward's monster movie.

As you might guess from that Rising Sun-esque background, the film has one foot in Godzilla's traditional Japanese stomping ground, but this monster has a passport and will travel - as those choppers might suggest.

The film boasts an accomplished human cast, including Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen and David Straithairn, but it's the main man himself who required most care and attention from the director.

"Trying to get the face right was the main thing," says Edwards. "I guess he's got more of a bear's face, or a dog's. We also used eagle. There's a lot of nobility in an eagle. It made him feel very majestic and noble." Edwards also used London-based motion-capture facility The Imaginarium and its head, one Andy Serkis, on certain sequences to "control the souls" (as Edwards puts it) of his creations.

Godzilla hits screens on May 16, but you can pick up the new issue of Empire this Thursday (February 27) on newsstands. If you're a subscriber, of course, you don't have to worry about tracking one down on Thursday because you'll get this dishy cover any day now. And as if that weren't enough, keep your eyes peeled for more Godzilla goodness in the next few days...
